Thermal Equilibrium

Concept Explanation

Thermal Equilibrium

Thermal Equilibrium:

When two bodies at different temperature are brought into contact with each other, heat flows from hotter body to colder body until they are both at same temperature, this is the state of Thermal Equilibrium.

The amount of heat lost by the hotter body = the amount of heat gained by the colder body.

Day to day activities following Thermal Equilibrium:

  • When we place a hot water glass on the table in the room during the winter , it gets cool faster due the transfer of heat energy from hot water to the surrounding to maintain the equilibrium. After some time water reaches the  room temperature. At this point thermal equilibrium is maintained.
